Players' inability to maintain success a problem for Niners

One step forward, three steps backward. Shaking their heads after the Niners' latest disappointing loss in San Diego, sources on the scene believe perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this year's team is the full-scale lack of progress that has been shown by a host of players who were widely considered to be up-and-comers. "They've got so many guys who have been unable to maintain success," said one team insider. "Take Dashon Goldson, for instance. Going into the year, there were people saying he could become the league's next really good safety. And he just disappears. (OLB) Ahmad Brooks has a big two-sack outing that gets you excited, and then he blows great chances (dropping two sure interceptions) against the Chargers. (WR) Michael Crabtree just isn't getting any better. I don't know if it's the way they're developing these players, but you really have to wonder."
