Del Rio's job safe with Jaguars

Jack Del Rio will remain the Jaguars' head coach despite his team finishing with an 8-8 record and missing the playoffs this season.

Del Rio met with owner Wayne Weaver on Monday and will talk to the media on Tuesday. Weaver plans to address the media late Monday afternoon to announce that Del Rio will stay on.

Del Rio has been Jacksonville's head coach since 2003 and has an overall record of 65-63. Expectations were low for this year's team, but the Jags climbed to the top of the AFC South through 13 weeks with a 7-5 record. However, they stumbled down the stretch, and with an outside shot at winning the division in the final week of the season, lost a 34-17 decision to the Texans.

Del Rio's record in December and January the past three seasons is a dismal 4-11.

The Jags have been to the playoffs twice during Del Rio's tenure.

The way we see it

There was some talk about Del Rio's job being in jeopardy because Weaver is sick of mediocrity in Jacksonville, and another 8-8 season would seem to epitomize that. But we think a big reason for Weaver retaining Del Rio isn't because the team overachieved but because the owner doesn't want to eat the $10 million buyout. There will not be much room for error for Del Rio next season.
