Notre Dame's Brey eyes DePaul for Scott's return

By Brian Hamilton

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Carleton Scott walked onto the Purcell Pavilion floor Thursday in practice gear, without the faintest sign of a hitch or a gimp. Notre Dame's senior forward then casually drained 3-pointer after 3-pointer in warm-ups before practice.

These were good signs -- but just not signs that Scott will return any time soon from a slight hamstring tear. Irish coach Mike Brey reiterated before practice that the 6-foot-8-inch forward would not play at St. John's on Sunday and might not take the court until Notre Dame visits DePaul in early February.

"I got Feb. 3 on my mind," Brey said. "For my mindset and for our team's mindset, that's how we've got to think. And that's very realistic.
"But if something changes and it's before then, great. It definitely won't be Sunday. He will not play Sunday. If hes feeling better early in the week, do you reevaluate? I guess you could. But for us as a staff, we've talked about getting to February, with this is the group we have. And by then hopefully that thing is healed."

Scott was averaging 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds with a team-high 25 blocks when he went down with the injury against Syracuse. The Irish are 2-1 without him in the lineup, though his defensive versatility would have come in handy in a blowout loss at Marquette on Monday.

Freshman point guard Eric Atkins has taken Scott's place in the starting lineup and acquitted himself well, though, averaging 10 points in three starts and committing just three turnovers in 113 minutes.
