“He’s as good as any quarterback I’ve been around, certainly through our years at Boston College,” O’Brien said.
Now that Wilson is gone, he certainly better be.
No pressure.
So what would you do?
I don’t blame anyone in this situation, and don’t envy O’Brien for having to make the final call. It couldn’t have been an easy decision, but it’s not the one I would have made.
Instead of saying publicly that Wilson would be the backup if he decided to return, I would have put the onus on Wilson to earn his starting job back. If Glennon is as good as O’Brien has advertised, he should have no problem hanging on to the top spot.
Regardless of who won the job, it seems the only choice is to play the best quarterback in an effort to win every game on the schedule -- but that also means the best leader in the huddle, and the best player who commands the attention and respect of his teammates. If Wilson has since lost that, he’s lost the job.
It sounds simple, but it’s not, because my option could push Glennon out the door and leave the Wolfpack in the hands of redshirt freshman Tyler Brosius in 2012. Brosius or Glennon? Glennon or Wilson?
It’s not an easy choice. So go ahead and make it.
