Browns sign P Maynard

The Browns signed P Brad Maynard to replace another ex-Bear, Richmond McGee, who was placed on injured reserve after hurting his back in the season opener vs. Cincinnati.

McGee suffered a herniated disc before Sunday's game, McGee's agent, David Canter, told PFW Browns correspondent Tony Grossi of The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer in a story published earlier Tuesday. McGee averaged just 36.0 yards on eight punts in the 27-17 loss to the Bengals. 

McGee had been signed in early August replacing Reggie Hodges, who tore his Achilles during a practice on August 3.

Maynard, a 14-year vet, punted the past 10 years for the Bears, who released him following the lockout. He does not have a strong leg, but is considered a reliable and consistent directional kicker. Maynard also will likely take over the holder duties.

The way we see it

Chris Tabor, the Browns' special teams coordinator, was previously a special teams assistant in Chicago, so the Browns' interest in Maynard after McGee struggled isn't surprising. McGee is also an ex-Bear and was making his first NFL regular-season appearance Sunday. The Browns have an excellent return game led by Josh Cribbs and a solid, experienced kicker in Phil Dawson.
