Take 2: Pac-12 breakout players

A so-called "breakout" player can be a solid player who becomes very good or a guy who comes from nowhere to fill a critical role. It's not a one-size-fits-all deal. Which makes it perfect for our weekly Take 2: Who is a potential breakout player in the Pac-12 this year? Kevin Gemmell: I talked with Mike Riley earlier this week and mentioned to him I was thinking of picking Brandin Cooks as my potential breakout candidate in the conference this year.

Midwest venues interested in playoff

If the BCS brass opens the bidding process to host future college football playoff games, three venues in the Big Ten footprint would be interested. Officials from Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium, Detroit's Ford Field and St. Louis' Edward Jones Dome confirmed to ESPN.com that their groups would explore the possibility of bidding to host a semifinal or a championship game if college football's future postseason structure allows it. The BCS meetings took place this week in Hollywood, Fla.

The SEC's top producers in NFL draft

Over the past 10 years, Georgia has produced 57 total NFL draft picks, which leads the SEC. But over the past five years, LSU leads the way with 30 total draft picks. AFC East draft analysis

The AFC East struggled mightily last year. Only the New England Patriots finished with a winning record. The New York Jets (8-8), Miami Dolphins (6-10) and Buffalo Bills (6-10) are all playing catch up this season. The draft is the best way for the Jets, Dolphins and Bills to close the gap with the reigning AFC champs. It's also an opportunity for New England to get better, particularly on defense, in order to make another Super Bowl run. Here are the highlights of the AFC East draft: BEST MOVE The best move was actually a series of moves by the Patriots.

Spartans' Adams is Johnny-on-the-spot

It was one of the defining plays of Michigan State's season, and the Big Ten year as a whole. Michigan had the ball on the Spartans' 9-yard line late in the fourth quarter, trailing by a touchdown and needing a yard on fourth down. Denard Robinson faked a handoff, dropped back -- and was immediately wrapped up and brought to the ground by Michigan State cornerback Johnny Adams. If Robinson and the Wolverines were surprised, they shouldn't have been.

Bills help secondary with CB Gilmore

After much speculation, the Buffalo Bills drafted a player not many had on their radar, taking South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore with the No. 10 overall pick. Gilmore should immediately help Buffalo's inconsistent pass defense. He is a solid all-around corner who can make plays, force turnovers and tackle against the run. Buffalo continues to pump resources into its revamped 4-3 defense this offseason. The Bills spent a majority of their free-agency dollars on starting defensive ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson.

Patriots aren't playing around

You knew Bill Belichick couldn’t stand having one of the worst defenses in the NFL. That is part of the reason the New England Patriots traded up -- not once, but twice -- to land another defender. New England traded up again to No. 25 in the first round. This time the reigning AFC champs drafted Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower. The Patriots saw tremendous value at the end of the first round and jumped at the chance to land Hightower. The Patriots need help being more physical, and that is what Hightower brings.

Are Patriots looking to move up?

Did New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick watch ESPN.com's blogger mock draft on Monday? It seems that way after Thursday's report by Albert Breer of the NFL Network that New England has had talks with the Seattle Seahawks about moving up to the No. 12 pick. In Monday's blogger mock draft, I had those same trade talks with NFC West/Seattle general manager Mike Sando. The Seahawks are open to moving down in this draft, and New England has plenty of draft capital to move up, although it's not the road the Patriots often take.
