With starting QB Josh Freeman questionable for Sunday's game against Carolina, the Buccaneers promoted QB Rudy Carpenter from their practice squad Saturday.
Freeman had only limited participation in practices Wednesday through Friday with a right shoulder injury, which he suffered in last Sunday's loss to Tennessee although he played the entire game.
If Freeman is unable to play vs. the Panthers, backup Josh Johnson will get the start, with Carpenter backing him up.
The Bucs released veteran LB Zac Diles to clear a roster space for Carpenter. Diles played in seven games for Tampa, recording one tackle.
