Draft Dose: Blinn College's NFL connection

Blinn College has received a lot of publicity over the past year after its former star QB Cam Newton led Auburn to the BCS national championship, winning a Heisman Trophy in the process. Newton's draft stock has been the subject of much debate in the scouting community with some thinking he is the best player in the draft, while others don't think he is even worthy of a first-round pick.

Whenever Newton does get picked, he won't be the only product from Blinn to have heard his name called. While the junior college located in Brenham, Texas (about 60 miles west of Houston), won't be confused with USC any time soon, it has produced a remarkable number of quality NFL players over the years.

In the 18th installment of the Draft Dose series, we look back at some of the others from this small school who have made it all the way to the NFL.

DB Lyle Blackwood

Blackwood played at Blinn College before transferring to TCU. A ninth-round pick of the Broncos in 1973, Blackwood went on to play 14 seasons in the NFL. Blackwood spent the bulk of his time as a Miami Dolphin, totaling 14 interceptions in six seasons with the club. Blackwood played alongside his brother Glenn in Miami and was a member of the "Killer B's" defense, one of the more ferocious defensive units in the '80s. Blackwood played in Super Bowl XVII, suffering defeat at the hands of the Redskins. Still, Blackwood had an incredibly productive career considering his humble beginnings at a small junior college in Texas.

RB Bernard Scott

Scott was a first-team All-NJCAA selection at Blinn after leading the Buccaneers to a 12-0 record and the NCJAA national championship. In the national title game, Scott rushed for 193 yards and a touchdown, garnering MVP honors. Scott then transferred to Abilene Christian, where he played for two seasons, rushed for 4,321 yards, scored 73 touchdowns and won the Harlon Hill Award (The Division II "Heisman") in 2008. Scott was selected in the sixth round by the Bengals in '09 and has been a solid contributor as the backup to Cedric Benson. Scott has averaged 4.6 yards per carry for his career and has also found a role as a kick returner for the Bengals.

DB Ryan Mouton

Mouton went to Blinn for two years because of academic issues. He redshirted in 2005 but recorded five interceptions in '06 before transferring to Hawaii. Mouton played in 11 games in '07, his first at Hawaii, and then started 13 games for the Warriors in '08. A third-round pick of the Titans in the '09 NFL draft, Mouton has played in 23 games as a cornerback and kick returner in two seasons with the Titans, including two starts as a rookie in '09.

WR Quincy Morgan

Morgan began his career at Blinn in 1996, spending two years playing football and running track, before transferring to Kansas State. Morgan recorded multiple 1,000-yard seasons while at Kansas State and was twice named first-team All-Big 12. A second-round pick of the Browns in the 2001 NFL draft, Morgan played parts of four seasons with the Browns, starting 45 games for the club. Morgan bounced around the league for a couple of years after that but never emerged as a true go-to receiver.

QB Michael Bishop

A teammate of Morgan's at Blinn and Kansas State, Bishop led Blinn to two national championships and was undefeated in his time at the school. Bishop arrived at Kansas State in 1997 and was the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Bishop showed off his dual-threat capabilities in '98, when he finished second in Heisman Trophy voting to Texas RB Ricky Williams. The Patriots snatched Bishop in the seventh round of the '99 NFL draft, and Bishop appeared in eight games in 2000. However, Bishop didn't stick in the NFL and spent the better part of the next decade bouncing around among other leagues, including stints in the Arena league, the CFL and NFL Europe.
