Broncos release veteran TE Graham

The Broncos have released veteran TE Daniel Graham, who has been with the team the past four seasons.

"Our organization is extremely grateful for the character, leadership and high level of play that Daniel Graham brought to the Broncos during his four seasons with this team," said John Elway, the team's executive vice president of football operations. "Beginning at Thomas Jefferson High School and throughout his time at the University of Colorado and as a Broncos team captain, Daniel always has been embraced and respected by everyone in Denver.

"We are thankful to Daniel for all of his dedication to the Broncos and this community, and we wish him all the best."

Graham struggled to fit into the passing game last season and was targeted just 37 times, including a pair of games with zero targets.

He had a career-low 148 receiving yards on 18 receptions, in the same year when he started all 16 games. Graham was held without a touchdown for the first time in his career.

The way we see it

Former head coach Josh McDaniels preferred to use his tight end as an extra blocker, a role Graham fit well. New head coach John Fox has a greater history of throwing to the tight end, a likely reason for the move. The organization is expected to add a more athletic player at that position — one who has the ability to contribute in both the blocking and passing games.
