Sox's Marquez tries to make his mark vs. SD

By Mark Gonzales

PEORIA, Ariz. -- With Jake Peavy destined to start the season on the disabled list, the Sox could carry a 12-man pitching staff with Phil Humber taking Peavy's spot as the fifth starter.

They also could use insurance in the form of another long reliever, which is one reason why Jeff Marquez got the start Monday night against San Diego.

Marquez, who is out of minor league options, felt comfortable after pitching four innings and being charged with two earned runs against the Padres.
"Regardless of whether I was going out there for two or four (innings), I was taking each inning at a time," Marquez said. "But it was cool to out there and get a start and pitch well, so I was excited."

Marquez has a 2.70 ERA in 13 1/3 innings this spring, and he has walked only two batters. He is the only remaining player left on the spring roster who was acquired in the infamous Nick Swisher trade after the 2008 season.

Marquez was on track to make the Sox's 2009 roster until suffering a hamstring pull, and then he he was limited to 11 starts at Triple-A Charlotte because right elbow inflammation. He was one of the first cuts last spring but received a brief promotion to the Sox on July 9.

Marquez wasn't informed that he was starting until four hours before Monday's game. Mark Buehrle was scheduled to start until concerns about the wet weather caused the Sox to push Buehrle's start to Tuesday against Cincinnati's Triple-A team at Goodyear.

"I'm feeling good," Marquez said. "I'm feeling healthy and going out there and pitching well and I'm doing what I can on my end just to try to make it a tougher decision for them and figure it out."
