Lack of leadership shown from Michael Floyd

Spring practice begins Wednesday for Notre Dame, and optimism is running high. But the guy who should be the team's leader has put a damper on that.

Star receiver Michael Floyd, who opted to return for his senior season rather than go to the NFL, was arrested on a DUI charge early Sunday morning in South Bend. Floyd was cited for underage drinking in Minnesota in January 2010. This second offense could subject him to harsh penalties from Notre Dame's Residence Life, which could include suspension or even expulsion from school. That's not even counting any football-related punishments head coach Brian Kelly could hand out.

Kelly praised Floyd last year for his work ethic and leadership on the field, but the senior has now put both himself and his team's fortunes in jeopardy. A cloud will hang over spring practice. This should have been a time for celebrating his return to the Irish and contemplating the school records he might break. Instead, Floyd has let a lot of people down, including himself.
