With 6 minutes 13 seconds remaining, DePaul's Tony Freeland brought a raucous cheer to the McGrath Arena by making a free throw.
On a three-point play after being fouled on a layup, Freeland sunk the free throw and put 100 points on the scoreboard for the Demons in their season-opening 114-81 victory on Sunday night against Chicago State.
DePaul's last 100-point game was a 108-69 victory against Syracuse in 2006. The Blue Demons' highest-scoring game last season took triple overtime for them to reach 82 points in a loss to St. John's.
This is the note the Blue Demons hoped to start the season on. Now let's see how long they can hold this tune.
In the season opener and the first game under new coach Oliver Purnell, DePaul shot 60 percent (21-of-35) from the field, led by 11 points from forward Mike Stovall.
Chicago State was flustered by DePaul's pressing defense, turning the ball over 14 times and committing 20 fouls. The Cougars shot just 16-of-40.
But DePaul was far from perfect -- the Blue Demons made just 15-of-21 free throws and turned the ball over 13 times.
After trailing by as many as 20 points, the Cougars switched to a zone defense and cut the DePaul lead to 14 points at halftime.
Both teams are starting seasons with renewed hope with the introduction of new coaches. The Blue Demons are led by Oliver Purnell, who previously coached at Clemson. Chicago State is headed by Tracy Dildy, a former assistant coach at Illinois-Chicago and DePaul.
The Cougars went 9-23 last season, while the Blue Demons were 8-23.
