It certainly has been hard for Cowboys officials to watch WR Dez Bryant struggle off the field and not be in contact with him for guidance. But that hasn't been the only lockout-induced pangs of silence. The team says it has badly wanted to get on the horn with the agent for OLT Doug Free and keep the fifth-year free agent around a while longer. Free took some time to finally crack the starting lineup, but once he did so last season he was a revelation. Going into the season, Free was the biggest question, but he exited it as one of the few sure things going forward. And the Cowboys say they would like to keep it that way by signing him to a new contract. What is not clear is what kind of contract, because without a labor agreement we don't know whether he is an unrestricted or restricted free agent. If he's restricted, the two sides likely can wrangle for a year before they need to sign a long-term extension. But the risk is that Free plays even better and raises his price tag.
