Redskins' Gomes stands out in first test

With LaRon Landry inactive with an Achilles injury in Week 10, rookie DeJon Gomes started in his place and did a nice job as a replacement. Head coach Mike Shanahan praised Gomes' play, saying he was sound in coverage and against the run and that they didn't miss a beat without Landry. Now don't misconstrue the coach's statement: Shanahan is not creating a SS controversy here. Our sources say that Gomes does not have the same rare athleticism that Landry does, or his exceptional hitting ability. Still, Gomes has a nose for the ball, is willing to stick it in the pile and he has decent enough range and athleticism for the position. What does he lack? Size. He's not the biggest guy for that spot, but there are other similarly built players who have spent most of their careers playing in the box. A strong finish to the season might not be enough to convince the team to let Landry, a 2012 free agent, walk. But it could ensure Gomes has an expanded role next season.
