Donny Nickey: $2,500 Fine for Contact With Ref Shows Incident an Accident

Donny Nickey wasn't thrilled with being fined, but he said he believes the NFL understands what happened this past Sunday.

Nickey, the Tennessee Titans' safety/special teams ace, has been fined $2,500 by the NFL for making contact with an official during a 33-25 loss at San Diego this past Sunday, Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reported.

The incident occurred following a special teams play, and as Wyatt reported Wednesday, Nickey said he was "body slammed" by San Diego offensive lineman Scott Mruczkowski. Nickey rose to retaliate, and as he did, made contact with referee Bill Leavy.

Nickey was ejected, and Titans coach Jeff Fisher said afterward Nickey would be fined because NFL rules dictated as much whenever a player makes contact with an official.
