Jerry Rice Named NFL's Greatest Player

Jerry RiceAn NFL Network special tabbed San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice as the greatest player in National Football League history Thursday.

Rice -- who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer after a career that saw him hold every important career receiving record, including most yards, receptions and touchdowns -- edged out Cleveland running back Jim Brown, who was voted second ahead of New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

The voting was conducted by a panel of former football coaches and executives as well as writers and broadcasters convened by NFL Films President Steve Sabol.

The rest of the top 10 included Rice's former San Francisco teammate, quarterback Joe Montana, Chicago running back Walter Payton, Baltimore quarterback Johnny Unitas, Philadelphia and Green Bay defensive tackle Reggie White, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning -- the only active player in the top 10 -- Green Bay receiver Don Hutson and Chicago middle linebacker Dick Butkus.
