Would WR-starved Rams even consider Moss?

With rookie QB Sam Bradford growing into a future star before their eyes, the Rams' fans in attendance for the team’s fourth victory in five home games Sunday against the Panthers continued to get their money’s worth at Edward Jones Dome this season. Now just imagine if the suddenly available Randy Moss was added to Bradford’s rag-tag WR arsenal.

On the day after a receiving corps that has been decimated by injuries came up with a very gutty collective effort in the Rams’ convincing 20-10 victory over the Panthers, intriguing food for thought suddenly developed when it was revealed that Moss — who had been traded earlier this season from the Patriots to the Vikings to hopefully become a high-powered target for QB Brett Favre — was reportedly given the heave-ho after a postgame rant that suggested he wasn’t too happy being adorned in Vikings purple. 

Is it even remotely possible that the Rams might consider taking a flier on Moss with an NFC West Division title appearing to definitely be within reach at the season’s halfway point? In a very strange NFL season up to now, stranger things have already happened. In any event, the Rams have to be feeling good about themselves with a 4-4 record that few experts saw coming. Bradford, who had his best pro performance against the Panthers, is looking better with every snap he takes, and St. Louis’ defense, which limited Carolina to only 201 yards and registered four takeaways, is becoming a genuine force to reckon with.

Taking into account Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s “Four Pillars” philosophy which puts a high premium on players of high character, it would seem very unlikely that he and the Rams’ hierarchy would risk taking a chance getting involved with Moss, who probably managed to singlehandedly eliminate any shot the Vikings had at turning their season around with his petulant, self-absorbed personality tailor-made for ruining team chemistry

But Moss still can get it done when he applies himself, and while the likes of Brandon Gibson, Danny Amendola and a gimpy Laurent Robinson, among others, have put forth a very serviceable effort for the Rams, none of them can hold a candle to Moss in terms of being a downfield threat with off-the-charts natural talent. All of the sudden, the Rams are actually a bona fide contender, and a motivated Moss conceivably could provide a major short-term boost. Then again, the odds are strong that Moss could become an instant liability considering his most recent behavior. To use a baseball analogy, Moss could make Milton Bradley look like Cal Ripken Jr.

Then again, with Bradford offering a Tom Brady-like dimension, is it possible Moss just might decide to stop pouting long enough to make the Rams a runaway division winner in the NFC West?

Realistically, the Rams are much more concerned right now about getting key wounded players such as RB Steven Jackson (fractured finger), OT Jason Smith (concussion) and DE James Hall (broken hand against Carolina) a well-deserved rest this coming week during the team’s bye.

But wouldn’t it be something if they decided to gamble on Moss before some other team beats them to the punch?
