The Panthers have placed the franchise tag on C Ryan Kalil, keeping him off the free-agent market. The news was first reported by PFW correspondent Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald.
Kalil has played in 50 games during his pro career, starting 47 of them. He has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons and is considered to be one of the better centers in the NFL.
The way we see it
Carolina had a difficult choice when figuring out whom to give their franchise tag to: DE Charles Johnson or Kalil. The team figured the center would be harder to replace if lost in free agency, a reason he was chosen. This seems like the smart decision, and it's possible the team can work out an extension with Johnson, as well.
