Giants will lean on Prince early

The drafting of first-round CB Prince Amukamara, who slid to the 19th pick, was a surprise to some. Perhaps after a closer look at the Giants' situation, it should not have been. Amukamara will be on the field right away, even though he probably won't win a starting job on defense. The team expects him to play a big role on special teams, where he has experience at gunner. The punt-coverage unit was a disaster last season, and the DeSean Jackson TD was a playoff killer. But the Giants also expect Amukamara to win the nickel CB job at some point on defense. They have great insurance in case he's not ready right away with Aaron Ross, but Amukamara can beat out Ross. Even if Amukamara wins that job, it's likely that Terrell Thomas, who enjoys playing the slot, would go inside with Amukamara at right corner. Plus, Ross and Thomas both have expiring contracts after this season, so drafting Amukamara makes lots of sense.
