Bengals RB Cedric Benson has been sentenced to 20 days in jail after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge from 2010. He also will have to serve 30 hours of community service and pay restitution to the victim in that case, estimated to be about $5,000, the Austin American-Stateman reported.
Appearing at an Austin, Texas, courthouse on Monday, Benson learned of his punishment for an attack of an employee at an Austin bar last year. According to assistant Travis County attorney Corby Holcomb, the running back may not miss any games during this season. Benson plans on turning himself in on Oct. 17, the start of the Bengals' bye week. With good behavior, he might be required to serve only one week.
"His priority right now is to get back to work and put these legal matters behind him," said Sam Bassett, Benson's attorney.
The running back also resolved a lawsuit filed in July 2011 by a former roommate of Benson's that stated he was attacked. In that case, the charge was dismissed and will not be refiled if Benson stays out of trouble for one year.
