As part of an ongoing offseason attempt to upgrade team speed, the Dolphins drafted WR Clyde Gates, a burner out of Abilene Christian. Gates has the inside track to be the team's No. 4 wide receiver and, along with Reggie Bush, gives Chad Henne speedy options in addition to Brian Hartline. Count WR Davone Bess among those impressed with Gates early on. "He's young and raw, and he's getting better every day," Bess told PFW. "Just with his speed, he will attract attention, and that's something you can't coach. He can run. Put the ball in his hands and let him run and make plays." In addition to playing receiver, Gates has assumed the role as the team's punt and kickoff returner this preseason. The Dolphins were 22nd in the league in kickoff-return average last season with Nolan Carroll and Patrick Cobbs. Cobbs is now on the Saints and Carroll has yet to return a kickoff. Even though the new kickoff rules somewhat diminish Gates' impact, he still provides an electric burst of speed on returns the team didn't have last season.
