Trustees: Paterno, Spanier out at PSU

The Penn State Board of Trustees announced Wednesday night that head football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier both are out in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Paterno had announced earlier Wednesday that he would retire following the 2011 season. He said in a statement that the Board of Trustees should spend no time worrying about his status. Instead, the Board has terminated the coach after 61 years at the school.

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will serve as Penn State's acting head coach Saturday against Nebraska.

Spanier elected to resign Wednesday and will be replaced temporarily by provost Rodney Erickson.
