Tevez To Recover Injury Back Home

It seems that Manchester City?s 3-0 defeat against Arsenal is inflicting more problems for the Eastland?s side as they could loose their talismanic captain, Carlos Tevez, who was injured and needed more time recovery time than it was expected.

The latest injury scans stated that the Argentinian international thigh injury needs at least two weeks to recover and this has resulted in Roberto Mancini?s decision to give a holiday break for the captain by sending him home to Argentina.  Read more... Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast

Pat Fitzmaurice is addicted to competitive cooking shows ("Top Chef," "Chopped," Hell's Kitchen," etc.), and he also loves to eat. Since he isn't much of a cook, he's channeling his chef obsession into Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast, a regular column featuring an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Bon appétit.(END ITALICS)

Appetizer: Spicy Buffalo wings

Regular readers of this column know that I have a morbid fascination with the Buffalo Bills. Before the season began, I tried to analyze the Buffalo offense and suggested that Bills head coach Chan Gailey, having proven himself an adaptable tactician in the past, would structure his offense around what appeared to be the team's greatest strength: the RB troika of Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller and Marshawn Lynch.

So much for that idea. Buffalo suddenly has a dangerous passing game. The 2010 Bills won't make fans forget Jim Kelly and the K-Gun offense, but these new-look Bills can throw it around a little bit.

Turns out that Ryan Fitzpatrick is a pretty good quarterback. He's thrown 11 TD passes in four starts, he lit up the vaunted Baltimore defense for 382 yards and four TDs last week, and his passer rating currently stands at 102.2. Sure, a month worth of starts is a small sample size, but no way could you have watched Fitzpatrick carve up the Ravens last weekend and walked away still thinking he's a scrub. He's completed at least two-thirds of his passes in all but one of his four starts. His one bad passing game was against the Jets, who pick their teeth with opposing quarterbacks. (And in that game, Fitzpatrick still provided some fantasy value by rushing for 74 yards.) Fitzpatrick has so-so arm strength, but his quick feet and mobility are assets, and he went to Harvard, so we know he's intelligent.

Fitzpatrick can be a decent spot starter for fantasy teams the rest of the way, maybe even an every-week starter. In terms of fantasy value the rest of the way, I'd rank him even with or ahead of Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer and Matthew Stafford, all of whom were considered top-15 (or at worst, top-20) quarterbacks before the start of the season. But here's the rub for dynasty-leaguers: The 2011 NFL draft will feature some excellent QB prospects, and the Bills will be in position to take one. Unless Fitzpatrick plays at close to a league-MVP level the rest of the season, the Bills won't pass on a QB prospect such as Andrew Luck of Stanford or Ryan Mallett of Arkansas. The Bills could draft a quarterback and trade Fitzpatrick to a QB-hungry team in order to improve themselves at other positions, but more likely, they'd hang on to Fitzpatrick (who's under contract through 2011) and have him spend the first month or two of the 2011 season keeping the seat warm for his eventual successor. The latter scenario would obviously tarnish his dynasty-league value.

The other emerging force in the Buffalo passing game is WR Steve Johnson (and by the way, he prefers to go by "Stevie"). He's caught TD passes in four consecutive games, and last week he rang up a career-high 158 receiving yards on eight catches. Johnson was the 224th overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Buffalo took Indiana WR James Hardy in the second round of that year's draft, but Johnson's emergence in training camp this year prompted the Bills to kick Hardy to the curb. Johnson is now a viable fantasy starter, and he might be a fixture in fantasy lineups for years to come.

WR Lee Evans has always been a skilled pass catcher whose talents were mostly squandered by a steady stream of mediocre Bills quarterbacks. He's come alive lately, with 11 catches for 192 yards and four TDs in his last two games. It finally appears safe for fantasy owners to start Evans.

Even little Roscoe Parrish now offers a wee bit of fantasy value, maybe as an emergency flex option. Parrish had eight receptions last week and four receptions a week earlier. He's never been much of a TD scorer, but with his blazing speed, he could break a few long ones if Fitzgerald keeps targeting him this often.

And by the way, I wouldn't hesitate to start any of the principals in the Buffalo passing game against the Chiefs this week. Kansas City ranks 25th in the league against the pass, and don't forget that Chiefs head coach Todd Haley fired Gailey as his offensive coordinator shortly before the start of the '09 season. Gailey professes to harbor no ill will about it, but if the suddenly plucky Bills are able to get any sort of lead on the Chiefs this weekend, they probably won't let up on the throttle.

Salad: Thai crunch salad

I haven't been to the chain restaurant California Pizza Kitchen in a while, and I've been craving this salad they offer. It has a wonderful cilantro-lime dressing, and the "crunch" comes from crisp rice sticks and fried wontons.

The Buccaneers are adding some major crunch to their offense by increasing LeGarrette Blount's workload. I've discussed Blount in this space before. He piqued my interest by running for a TD against the Steelers in Week Three, but then he disappeared for a while. Blount resurfaced last week, rushing 11 times for 72 yards against the Rams. I watched the Rams-Bucs game on DirecTV's "NFL Shortcuts" and played back Blount's runs in slo-mo. The verdict on the rookie from Oregon:

Real.

(Wait for it ...)

Deal.

Man, does this guy pack some power. I guarantee that a few St. Louis defenders are sporting Blount-inflicted bruises this week. And it's not like the Rams have been pantywaists against the run this year. Blount is just a bull of a runner. He won't be brought down with an arm tackle. And his Week Seven numbers would have been even better had one especially impressive run not been nullified by offsetting penalties.

Look, I admire Cadillac Williams for his willingness to keep battling back from injuries, but the Caddy isn't getting it done. He's averaging 2.5 yards a carry and has lost all of his first-step quickness. It's only a matter of time before the Buccaneers let Blount do the heavy lifting in the running game, with support from Caddy and Earnest Graham.

Get on board the Blount bandwagon now, while there are still seats available.

Entrée: Roasted duck breast with duck dumpling, caramelized bok choy and coriander sauce

As mentioned in the note at the top of this column, I'm a big fan of competitive cooking shows, and Bravo's "Top Chef" is the king of the genre. The most recent "Top Chef" winner was Kevin Sbraga, who knocked it out of the park in the final challenge of the season, bowling over the judges with a remarkable four-course feast that included this innovative duck dish. "Top Chef" contestants aren't celebrity chefs. (Bravo has, however, staged two seasons of "Top Chef Masters," which does feature high-profile chefs.) Sbraga and other "Top Chef" competitors are up-and-comers turning out excellent food at restaurants across the country. The show expands their profiles and in some cases puts them on a path to culinary stardom.

In the spirit of "Top Chef," let's take a look at a few up-and-coming stars who are making quantum leaps this season and will be taken much earlier in next year's fantasy drafts than they were in this year's drafts.

Darren McFadden — Interest in McFadden had started to wane after two tepid, injury-plagued NFL seasons, but as we know now, the talent that made him a two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up during his time at the University of Arkansas does, in fact, translate to the pro level. McFadden has already reached a career high with 557 yards, which works out to better than 110 yards per game. He also has 193 receiving yards, and he's scored six TDs. What makes McFadden's ascension remarkable is the fact that the Raiders haven't really done anything to improve his supporting cast. The Raiders' run blocking has improved (Oakland ranks eighth in Football Outsiders' "adjusted line yards" run-blocking metric), but their passing game still stinks. If McFadden can play this well in a threadbare offense, it's hard to see a downside for 2011, other than a mildly concerning injury background. He looks like a top-10 fantasy pick for 2011 and could well be taken ahead of consensus top-five 2009 picks Ray Rice and Maurice Jones-Drew in most drafts.

Hakeem Nicks — He already has eight TD receptions and is on pace for a 100-catch season. Nicks is an incredibly fluid receiver with one of the best pairs of hands in the NFL. Everything about this guy says "superstar." Even though he has to share balls with Steve Smith and Mario Manningham, good receivers in their own right, Nicks is managing to pile up gaudy stats. He'll be universally ranked as a top-five receiver next year, and he might vie with Andre Johnson and Roddy White for No. 1.

Ahmad Bradshaw — Another Giant makes the list. Some people really liked Bradshaw going into this year's drafts, but only enough to draft him in, say, the third or fourth round. Almost everyone is going to like him going into next year's draft. He's out of Brandon Jacob's ample shadow now and has become the main man in the Giants' running game. Jacobs is making a lot more money than he's worth right now, so it's a good bet the Giants will release him in the offseason, in which case there might not be anyone around to vulture a significant number of touchdowns from Bradshaw. (Jacobs already has five TDs this season.) If Jacobs leaves, Bradshaw probably becomes a first-rounder in fantasy drafts.

Kenny Britt — He's making good on the promise he flashed in spurts as a rookie. Even though he's not playing with a top-flight passer, Britt is starting to roll up some big numbers. Last week's 225-yard, three-TD performance officially heralded his arrival. He's an every-week fantasy starter now, and it will be interesting to see how he finishes the season. It's a safe bet he'll be a top-20 receiver in next year's drafts, and he could end up as a top-10 guy.

Two others worth mentioning: Peyton Hillis and Brandon Lloyd. Both were afterthoughts in this year's fantasy drafts. One or both of these guys went undrafted in a lot of leagues. That certainly won't be the case next summer.

Hillis is a beast. The reason I hesitate to include him with the group above is that his rugged style is ideally suited for a committee role rather than a featured role. Hillis is tough as nails, but the way he runs, I don't think he could withstand a 300-carry season.

Due to his age (he'll be 30 next July), Lloyd might not be an early-round pick next year, but he'll certainly be on everyone's draft lists, which is more than you could say for him this year. He didn't even make my preseason draft board. (Whoops.) Lloyd is on pace for a 1,600-yard season. He won't be available for long in 2011 drafts.

Dessert: Chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream

The pleasing contrast between hot and cold is what makes this one of my favorite desserts. We'll see this type of contrast on Monday night when the Colts host the Texans in the final game of Week Eight.

The Indy-Houston game could be a fantasy bonanza. In leagues across the country, games could take some wild swings as the Texans and Colts race up and down the field. Of course, there's always the possibility that this could end up a low-scoring affair — the NFL is funny that way. But I think there's a greater chance that you'll be attacked by zombies on your way to get coffee tomorrow morning.

The Colts rank second in the league in passing, averaging 314 passing yards per game. The Texans' pass defense is ranked dead last. Houston is the only team in the league giving up more than 300 passing yards per game. Even with TE Dallas Clark and WR Austin Collie on the shelf for this one, Peyton Manning should have no problem amassing big numbers. He threw for 433 yards and three TDs against the Texans in Week One. I'm setting the over/under number for total receiving yards by Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon for this game at 298. It's even money on whether one of them hits the 200-yard mark.

The Texans' offense ranks fifth in rushing yardage, and they've scored a league-high nine rushing touchdowns. The Colts' run defense is as reliably inferior as ever. Indy is 26th against the run, yielding 137.3 rushing yards per game and a robust 4.8 yards per carry. Arian Foster ran for 231 yards and three TDs against the Colts in Week One. Foster and the newly resurgent Derrick Ward are drooling like Pavlov's dogs over this matchup.

Hot offense, meet cold defense. Cold defense, meet hot offense. The contrast should make for a tasty Monday-night dessert course.

Week Eight fantasy tips: TEs

No team has been hit with more injuries in their secondary and linebacking corps than the Packers, and now some new and untested players will have the task of slowing down the highly efficient Jets offense. This should open up space for Dustin Keller to operate in the middle of the field. The New York TE is Mark Sanchez's favorite target, leading the team in catches, yards and TDs, and he could have a monster game against Green Bay.

Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew might be a nice play this week. He has started to heat up a little as a receiver, eliminating the frustrating drops that were a weekly occurrence early in the season. With Matthew Stafford back, the Lions will want to give him a good number of three- and five-step drops to protect his shoulder injury somewhat. Pettigrew is becoming a regular target on intermediate passing routes and could turn in a nice game Sunday.

Don't be shocked if Seahawks TE John Carlson breaks out of his recent fantasy funk this Sunday in Oakland. After Seattle scored one TD last week in seven opportunities inside the red zone, team insiders suspect QB Matt Hasselbeck might look more in the direction of Carlson, who has been an effective red-zone target in the past. In the last three games, though, Carlson has only four catches and is without a score.

QB improvement key in Raleigh tonight

The website CP7forHeisman.com, launched in July when the Heisman Trophy seemed a reasonable goal, is still being updated with Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder’s stats. In early October, NC State launched a promotional web site for quarterback Russell Wilson, RussellWilson16.com.

They’re two of the best quarterbacks in the ACC, but in recent weeks, their play hasn’t backed up their hype. As Wilson and Ponder prepare to face each other tonight in a game that will determine the Atlantic Division front-runner, they do so looking to improve upon three interceptions each in their previous games. Wilson has thrown 18 touchdown passes this fall and nine interceptions. Ponder has thrown 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Whichever one makes the fewest mistakes tonight is likely to take the lead in the conference standings.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said interceptions can be deceiving because some of them can be attributed to aggressive play calling in the passing game, or a quarterback who’s talented enough and willing to take chances.

“Interceptions can be good and they can be bad,” Fisher said. “Because there is, at times if you're too cautious, you don't throw them, but you don't make plays either. Sometimes when you take opportunities and you're confident in your abilities, you're going to make a few throws in there that get tipped or guys make an interception on that. That's part of the game.

“We don't want interceptions,” he said. “You never want them, but you can't tell a guy to make all these plays but don't make a mistake. That's hard to do. When you're confident in your abilities and you have the abilities you have, sometimes you'll make one. But he also makes a lot of big plays with that too.”

Such is the case with both Ponder and Wilson, who are the difference-makers in their offenses. Wilson enters the Florida State game leading the ACC in passing yards with 303.4 per game and total offense with 332.0 per contest. Those marks rank fifth and fourth respectively in the FBS this week. He is averaging 55.3 more passing yards per game and 65.9 more yards of total offense than any other ACC quarterback.

Interceptions are uncharacteristic for Wilson. In the past three games, Wilson has thrown eight interceptions -- 38 percent of the interceptions thrown in his 31-game career. He’s thrown 66 career touchdown passes and only 21 picks.

“It’s going to happen sometimes,” Wilson said. “Sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some. But I’m the type of guy who’s going to keep working, keep getting better every week, trying to find something I can get better at whether it’s balance or getting the ball out on time, whatever it is, I try to find it and get better every single week.”

Ponder is seventh in the ACC in passing yards per game (186.4), but the Seminoles have been dependent upon their running game, which is one of the best in the country. His biggest contributions have come at critical times -- on third downs and in the red zone.

Ponder said the only stats that matter are the team’s 6-1 record, but that the passing game must improve if the Noles are going to continue to win. Ponder had one of his worst performances of his career in the win over Boston College, with four turnovers.

“There is no excuse at all,” he said. “A lot of it goes back to things that I did. I coughed the ball up for three interceptions and a fumble -- It’s terrible. It’s ultimately my fault. It was just one of those days. But I’ve learned and studied film. I’m going to prepare myself so that doesn’t happen.”

Fisher doesn’t expect it to.

“The guy has played one bad half,” Fisher said. “He’s played great. He’s leading us in third down (conversions) and led us in red zone (conversions). The guy has bounced back his whole career and he had one bad half. He’ll play well and do well.”

So will Wilson.

One of them, though, will play better.

Wildcats take fresh approach with freshmen

Pat Fitzgerald got a little defensive Tuesday when asked about his newfound willingness to play true freshmen.

"You're talking to a guy that played as a freshman," the Northwestern coach said. "I'm not anti playing freshmen. I look at it from a perspective of being realistic."

Northwestern never has freshmen enroll early, so Fitzgerald and his assistants spend the first 2-3 weeks of preseason camp evaluating the class and projecting who can help them in the coming season. They also consider how freshmen will adjust to the rigors of college, especially the academic component.

"It's deeper than whether or not he can help us in the kicking game or whether or not we sell kids a bag of goods in recruiting and say you're going to play as a freshman," Fitzgerald said. "It's their future."

Few players have made the cut in Fitzgerald's tenure.

Fitzgerald used five true freshmen in 2006, his first season as Northwestern's head coach, but he did so largely out of necessity after Northwestern lost a sizable senior class. Fitzgerald played only two true freshmen in 2007 and two more in 2008 before using three freshmen last fall.

But through the first seven games of 2010, Northwestern already has used five true freshmen: defensive lineman Will Hampton, running back Adonis Smith and receivers Venric Mark, Rashad Lawrence and Tony Jones.

The early returns are promising.
  • Lawrence has caught seven passes for 138 yards (19.7-yard average)
  • Jones recorded a 45-yard touchdown catch on his first play in college
  • Mark has contributed on returns and in the receiving game, and he gained 29 yards on a run last Saturday against Michigan State, the team's longest rush of the season
  • Smith, who didn't play until Week 5, provided a jolt to a struggling run game with 44 yards against the Spartans
  • Hampton has helped with the D-line depth and played in five games

There have been a few hiccups -- Mark fumbled against Minnesota, while Jones drew two offside penalties in the game -- but the potential is pretty obvious. Lawrence and Jones have accounted for three of the team's longest five pass plays this season.

"We thought these guys would contribute," Fitzgerald said, "and they're just working hard and getting better and better."

Fitzgerald admits he can be too conservative about freshmen, but he's not going to change how he handles them.

"Sometimes we're wrong," he said. "Sometimes maybe we look back and say, 'Gosh, I wish I would have played him or I wish I would have put them in.' But I'd rather err on the side of being a year late than a day early."

Cutler idle during practice portion open to media

By Brad Biggs

For the portion of practice that was open to media, Jay Cutler was an observer.

Backups Caleb Hanie and Todd Collins did the only throwing for the period that was open, although Cutler did have a shell on even though he was not wearing a helmet.

Missing practice were linebackers Lance Briggs (left ankle) and Brian Urlacher (groin), offensive linemen Olin Kreutz (unknown), Roberto Garza (left knee), Edwin Williams (back) and J'Marcus Webb (unknown). Garza was doing work on the side with athletic trainer Bobby Slater and will likely return to action next week. There is a good chance Kreutz was given a veteran day off.

Rookie safety Major Wright was practicing. So were safeties Danieal Manning and Chris Harris, who missed portions of practice last week.

The Bears will practice again Thursday and then will be set free for a three-day weekend with the bye.

Give Xavi the Ballon d'Or

I completely agree with Xabi Alonso. Xavi deserves the Ballon d'Or. He's the consummate footballer with excellent control and technique, tremendous vision, pinpoint accuracy, and unselfish attitude. He's a gentleman and a gentle man, making the perfect picture of how a professional footballer should act.

Now it looks like Xavi's playing days are numbered, years of heavy playing taking a toll on his achilles tendon. It truly sucks as a cul to see the man on the bench so often this season. The last time it was this way was in 2005-2006 when Xavi hurt his ACL. Bara without Xavi is a picture I don't want to see and didn't expect to see for a couple years. Much too soon. Hopefully, his woes will somehow be curtailed for a time and we might see Prof.X return to the pitch where he undoubtedly belongs.

Here's a man who's deserved such laurels before, but lost out to the more traditional goal-scoring player candidate. Xavi's time is running out now, so it behooves FIFA to finally redress this oversight and award the humble, brilliant footballer from Terrassa. Give the Ballon d'Or to the one person most deserving of it: Xavi.

LOCK OF THE WEEK

Which of your picks do you feel strongest about and why?

Hub Arkush: The Rams may still be a year or two away, but they are doing a lot of things right, and a bad Carolina team in St. Louis is perfect for them to continue to improve against.

Keith Schleiden: The Jets are an ascending team — Rex Ryan says so, and I believe him. The Packers are inconsistent, at best. New York won't blow Green Bay out, but they win by a touchdown.

Mike Holbrook: I can see the Chiefs beating the Bills much the same way they beat the Jaguars last week, turning a close game into a rout. That said, it's a tricky game for K.C., with the Raiders next.

Dan Arkush: The Dolphins have been the kings of the road this season, and I look for their magic in hostile territory to continue in Week Eight.

Eric Edholm: It seems counterintuitive to go with a team that just allowed 59 points, but the Broncos get to clean the slate against a 49ers club that could be without QB Alex Smith.

Mike Wilkening: The Lions are improved, but they have one win, and I don't think they should be favored. The Redskins won't overlook the Lions after being upset in Detroit last season.

Dan Parr: Faith in the Cowboys is fading fast, but they should get a pretty easy win. The Jaguars, who are coming off two blowout losses, won't be able to stop Dallas' passing game.

Michael Blunda: The Jaguars can't stop anybody on defense, so how are they going to contain the Cowboys' potent attack? Tony Romo should carve them up in a convincing Dallas victory.

Kevin Fishbain: The Raiders will likely never have this much momentum or confidence again all season, and they can use it as fuel for a win over a poor road team in Seattle.

Britt's performance not all on Hobbs, Allen

Titans QB Kerry Collins and WR Kenny Britt connected on touchdown passes of 26, 80 and 16 yards in Sunday's 37-19 win over the Eagles, who had no solutions in coverage. Britt finished the game with seven receptions for 225 yards, a career high, as CB Ellis Hobbs and rookie FS Nate Allen were among the Eagles who were victimized. It's easy to blame the two defensive backs, but they were not the only ones who must be called out.

The PFW Spin

The Eagles had no answers for Britt, who looked like James Lofton on Sunday. He did all his damage in only three quarters of action after being suspended for the first part of the game after an off-field incident a few days prior. The Eagles came in with one game plan and appeared to adjust poorly when Britt started getting loose often.

"They just kept running the same route and every different way I played it, they did the opposite of what I was thinking," Hobbs told assembled media members. "Our coverage just wasn't tight enough. (Britt) made the plays and we didn't. It was one of those days where every time we rolled the dice, we crapped out."

Hobbs was the man primarily matched up with Britt, who had 6-199-2 receiving in the second half (4-159-2 came in the final period alone). But several times in zone coverage, Hobbs passed Britt off to Allen, who was supposed to have over-the-top coverage. More than once, Collins hit Britt on a deep corner route — a double move that requires (a) pass protection and (b) loose coverage. The Eagles afforded both, time and time again.

So that brings defensive coordinator Sean McDermott into the conversation. He's being crushed in Philadelphia for his apparent unwillingness to adjust to the Britt-Collins mayhem, and there's some truth to that. When he blitzed, he left Hobbs covering a far quicker player; when McDermott played
zone, or zone dogs, Allen was late to react and get to the softer spots in the coverage.

The blame can be spread to those men, plus the front four that was not able to pressure adequately in the fourth quarter against a wooden Collins who doesn't move all that well in the pocket. If there's a common theme this season it's that the Eagles have been outplayed — in all phases — in several fourth quarters. That blame belongs to the whole team that has lacked a killer instinct at times, and whether or not you chalk that up to youth or not, it's a problem that must be fixed.

Packers-Vikings first-half spin

A real barn burner could be in the offing after the Packers and Vikings combined for 31 points in the first half of their first meeting of the season. For the Packers to rebound from their 17-14 deficit in the second half, the defense must do a better job of stopping the Vikings’ electrifying Percy Harvin, and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers must stop alternating between great throws in tight spaces and ill-advised passes like the two throws that were intercepted by the Vikings in the first 30 minutes.

Two other thoughts: (1) Packers WR James Jones is off to a terrific start after looking awful one week earlier in Green Bay’s loss to Miami. (2) Green Bay would be winning at the half had rookie Andrew Quarless not stumbled on Matt Flynn’s fourth-down heave, on which he was wide open.

Steelers at Dolphins halftime observations

MIAMI -- Halftime thoughts from Sun Life Stadium, where the Miami Dolphins trail the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-16 on Sunday afternoon:
  • Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne has hung in there against the vaunted Steelers pass rush. The Steelers haven't recorded a sack. Henne has looked a little jumpy at times, but he's 12 of 20 for 153 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.
  • Dolphins cornerback Jason Allen was victimized on a 53-yard Ben Roethlisberger strike to Mike Wallace in the second quarter. Allen gave Wallace a nice cushion, yet still got scorched by Wallace, who simply flashed past for a touchdown.
  • As you'd expect, the Dolphins are having trouble against the NFL's top-rated run defense. Ronnie Brown has five carries for 2 yards. Ricky Williams has six attempts for 20 yards.
  • There's been some bad tackling by both teams. Steelers receiver Hines Ward ducked and dodged his way into the end zone from 21 yards out, and Dolphins receiver Davone Bess juked past a couple Steelers defenders for a 26-yard score to pull the Dolphins within a point.
  • Here's a quirky stat: Thanks to the Steelers fumbling the opening kickoff and going three and out on their first possession, the Dolphins scored six points on 7 total yards in the first quarter. The Dolphins went three-and-out field goal, three-and-out field goal and then three-and-out punt.
  • That first-quarter punt was an impressive example of how to flip the field. With Miami on its 14-yard line, Brandon Fields crushed a 66-yarder. Antwaan Randle-El lost a yard on the return, plus a holding penalty put Pittsburgh on its 10-yard line.
  • Steelers right tackle Flozell Adams suffered an apparent left ankle or Achilles injury early in the second quarter and was replaced by former Buffalo Bills tackle Jonathan Scott.

Today's question: Suspension length for Rypien?

Reporters from Tribune newspapers around the nation give their take on the question of the day. Leave a comment with your opinion, and check back all day for updates.

Bob Foltman, Chicago Tribune

On Dec. 23, 1979, some members of the Boston Bruins went into the stands at Madison Square Garden and fought Rangers fans. Mike Milbury dispossessed one fan of his shoe and started hitting him with it. For that, then-NHL president John Ziegler suspended Milbury for six games and fined him $500.

How times have changed. Now the NHL frowns upon attacking the paying customers. Tuesday's incident in St. Paul between the Canucks Rick Rypien and a fan didn't come close to the rumble in the Garden, but expect Rypien to face a far more severe punishment from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Perception is reality and incidents that the NBA, NFL and MLB can shrug off tend to stick longer when it happens in hockey. So Bettman could, and should, make an example of Rypien. Speculation is that it will be between 5-15 games. I think it may be higher, perhaps between 15-20.

Ron Fritz, Baltimore Sun

Rick Rypien needs to be suspended and forced to attend anger management sessions. I'm thinking 10 games would give him enough time to reflect on his poor decision to grab a Minnesota Wild fan after Rypien had been tossed from the game.

In looking at the replay, it didn't look like the fan was doing much more than clapping and it certainly didn't look like he did enough to warrant being grabbed. But I didn't get to hear what the fan might have said about Rypien's momma. And I certainly understand Rypien's frustration after losing a fight to Brad Staubitz of the Wild and then being pushed around by an NHL linesman.

But athletes totally cross the line when they go after paying customers. Sure, fans can be over the top and some should even be escorted out of stadiums or arenas, but let security handle it. In this case, it didn't look like the fan did much, if anything, wrong.

Rypien is allowed to take matters into his own hands on the ice, not off it. Take a seat.

Joseph Schwerdt, South Florida Sun Sentinel

Upon further review, it appears Rick Rypien's actions were inexcusable. Hockey obviously is an emotional and confrontational sport, but Rypien's actions clearly crossed the line. The replay of his attack on a Minnesota Wild fan shows no physical provocation on the fan's part.

Sure, some fans can be jackasses. Some drink too much, scream foul language and toss objects or drinks on the ice. And while no player-fan confrontation is acceptable, it's understandable in some extreme situations. Who knows what this fan said as he applauded Rypien's departure from the game? But Rypien needed to lift himself above that, ignore the fan and walk away. The NHL should suspend him for no less than 15 games. And if he does it again, consider a season-long exile. Three strikes and he should be out for good.

Helene Elliott, Los Angeles Times

When Vancouver's Rick Rypien grabbed a fan at a Minnesota Wild game earlier this week, he violated a golden rule of business: Don't manhandle the paying customers.

A suspension of at least 15 games is warranted. And since he's not a high-paid star -- he's scheduled to earn $550,000 this season -- losing a proportional chunk of his salary will hurt him a lot.

We don't know what the fan might have said to trigger Rypien's rage -- and earn 15 minutes of fame, with said fan reportedly seeking legal representation. But Rypien, a well-conditioned professional athlete wearing full gear, has no business putting a hand on anyone but another player. You can make the joke that the NHL needs all the fans it can get and can't afford to let ticketholders be roughed up, but there's a serious point here about boundaries and Rypien crossing one that should not have been breached.

Notre Dame releases '11, '12 schedules

Notre Dame has released its full schedules for 2011 and 2012. Here they are:

2011
Sept. 3: South Florida
Sept. 10: at Michigan
Sept. 17: Michigan State
Sept. 24: at Pittsburgh
Oct. 1: at Purdue
Oct. 8: Air Force
Oct. 15: Open
Oct. 22: USC
Oct. 29: Navy
Nov. 5: at Wake Forest
Nov. 12: Maryland (at Fed Ex Field in Washington D.C.)
Nov. 19: Boston College
Nov. 26: at Stanford

2012

Sept. 1: Navy (at Dublin, Ireland)
Sept. 8: Purdue
Sept. 15: at Michigan State
Sept. 22: Michigan
Sept. 29: Open
Oct. 6: Miami (at Soldier Field in Chicago)
Oct. 13: Stanford
Oct. 20: BYU
Oct. 27: at Oklahoma
Nov. 3: Pittsburgh
Nov. 10: at Boston College
Nov. 17: Wake Forest
Nov. 24: at USC

Notre Dame is always going to play a challenging schedule, but 2012 looks like it will be a real bear. Fans who don't like seeing the likes of Western Michigan, Tulsa and Army on this year's slate won't have much to complain about with games against Oklahoma, Miami and BYU joining the usual suspects. That will be Year Three of the Brian Kelly era, and he'd better have his system fully in place and a team loaded to go. There's not an easy win on that list. Nor on the 2011 one, really.

Proviso West's Prater impresses USC coach

The Orange County Register reports: During USC's bye-week, a couple of freshman have coach coach Lane Kiffin's eye. One is receiver Proviso West's Kyle Prater, a spring standout Kiffin elected to redshirt because of a variety of leg injuries.

"If you can have a player redshirting like (tailback D.J. Morgan) and Kyle Prater, that's pretty exciting to look at. It's almost as if they're part of the next year's (recruiting) class."

Kiffin doesn't plan to play Prater, but the 6-foot-5 wideout showed he might be ready to play by leaping over a pile of blocking pads after making a sideline catch.
