Cora, Brewers to talk; Rose Jr. to Sox's farm staff

By Mark Gonzales

White Sox bench coach Joey Cora will interview Tuesday for Milwaukee's vacant managerial position.

Cora, 45, has served as the Sox's bench coach since 2007 after serving as third base coach for the first three seasons under manager Ozzie Guillen. He has interviewed for managerial vacancies with Washington and Pittsburgh in past seasons.

The White Sox are expected to announce the hiring of Pete Rose Jr. to their minor league staff once all hirings for the 2011 season are completed. Two team sources said Rose, 40, will manage at Rookie League-Bristol (Va.) of the Appalachian League.Rose embarked on a coaching career last summer for Florence (Ky.) of the independent Frontier League. Rose played parts of four minor league seasons for the Sox and reached the majors with Cincinnati in 1997.

Ernie Young, who managed the past two seasons at Class-A Kannapolis, has left to manage Class-A West Michigan in the Detroit system. Young recently managed Team USA to a third-place finish in the Pam-Am qualifying tournament.

Tommy Thompson is expected to take over Young's duties at Kannapolis.

Josh Phegley, one of the Sox's top catching prospects, will not play for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League. No reason was given for the departure of Phegley, who overcame ITP Syndrome, a disorder that attacks platelets in the system, to hit .284 at three minor league levels last summer.

Phegley was replaced by Jason Bour, who played last summer at Class-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham.
