Cutler idle during practice portion open to media

For the portion of practice that was open to media, Jay Cutler was an observer.

Backups Caleb Hanie and Todd Collins did the only throwing for the period that was open, although Cutler did have a shell on even though he was not wearing a helmet.

Missing practice were linebackers Lance Briggs (left ankle) and Brian Urlacher (groin), offensive linemen Olin Kreutz (unknown), Roberto Garza (left knee), Edwin Williams (back) and J'Marcus Webb (unknown). Garza was doing work on the side with athletic trainer Bobby Slater and will likely return to action next week. There is a good chance Kreutz was given a veteran day off.

Rookie safety Major Wright was practicing. So were safeties Danieal Manning and Chris Harris, who missed portions of practice last week.

The Bears will practice again Thursday and then will be set free for a three-day weekend with the bye.
