Kevin Kolb Reportedly Will Start for Injured Michael Vick in Week 17

Kevin Kolb startingAndy Reid had a relatively easy decision to make. Facing a meaningless Week 17 game against the Cowboys, Reid reportedly will start Kevin Kolb over a banged-up Michael Vick.

The Eagles had been battling with the Bears for a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs, but their shocking loss to Minnesota on Tuesday night eliminated any chance Philadelphia had at the No. 2 seed. The Eagles are now assured of the No. 3 spot.

Reid's decision will give Vick time to rest a bruised leg. It was also made all the easier by the fact that he has a backup who could start for numerous teams. Kolb has played in six games this year and thrown for more than 1,000 yards. And while Vick's emergence likely ends his chances of being the Eagles' long-term starter, every start is a chance to showcase himself for a potential trade.

Despite a marvelous campaign, Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams wasn't chosen to the Pro Bowl roster Tuesday night. Neither were any of his teammates.

Williams
Williams
Fret not, Bills fans. A charging buffalo helmet almost certainly will be on the field in Honolulu.

Williams just missed the Pro Bowl cut and was named first alternate, an NFL source informed me. Williams will be an immediate roster addition if Vince Wilfork, Haloti Ngata or Richard Seymour get hurt or make it to the Super Bowl, which will be played the week after the Pro Bowl.

There's an excellent chance one of the chosen defensive tackles won't dress for the Pro Bowl. Wilfork plays for the top-seeded New England Patriots. Ngata plays for the Baltimore Ravens, who have clinched a playoff berth.

Seymour won't have a shot at the Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders, but this was his sixth Pro Bowl selection. Players who have been there before sometimes pull out of the game with an "injury" because they'd rather take a break from football.

Wilfork has been selected to three Pro Bowls, Ngata two.

ProFootballFocus.com, an in-depth analysis site, rated Williams' omission from the Pro Bowl roster its worst snub in either conference.

Teams don't disclose their Pro Bowl alternates because they don't want the information used against them in contract negotiations if the player doesn't get added to the roster. More names will leak out in the coming days.

Cleveland State routs Loyola 73-55

Tribune News Services

CLEVELAND -- Aaron Pogue had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Cleveland State breezed to a 73-55 victory over Loyola in a Horizon League game Thursday night.

Trevon Harmon added 14 points while Jeremy Montgomery and Norris Cole each contributed 12 points for the Vikings (14-1, 3-0).
After spotting Loyola (9-5, 0-3) the game's first five points, Cleveland State led the final 33 minutes. The Vikings enjoyed their biggest margin, 31 points, after Charlie Woods made two free throws with 6:04 to play.

The Ramblers had no double-figure scorers as Walt Gibler and Courtney Stanley shared top-scoring honors with nine points each. They outscored Cleveland State 15-2 to finish the game as the Vikings went the final 6:30 without a field goal, but still ended up with their most lopsided defeat of the season. After winning its first seven games, Loyola has lost five of seven.

Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast

Pat Fitzmaurice is addicted to competitive cooking shows ("Top Chef," "Chopped," Hell's Kitchen," etc.), and he also loves to eat. Since he isn't much of a cook, he's channeling his chef obsession into Fitz's Four-Course Fantasy Feast, a regular column featuring an appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert. Bon appétit.

This column typically dishes up four courses per week. But with most fantasy leagues done for the season, we're going to make this a New Year's Day buffet, with an emphasis on 2011 fantasy drafts:

— The No. 1 pick in next year's fantasy drafts? Hmmm. It's probably safe to say that we'll enter 2011 without a consensus No. 1. But as of now, I'd go with Arian Foster. He's looked phenomenal this season, and I give him an edge over Adrian Peterson simply because Foster has fewer miles on his odometer. Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles are a notch below Foster and Peterson. Not a bad encore for Johnson this year after his unmatchable 2009 performance. Charles might be in the running for the top spot if not for Todd Haley's proclivity to limit Charles' carries and give goal-line carries to others.

— I was buying a bag of Cheez-Its from a vending machine when the Michael Vick bandwagon left the station earlier this season. It took me awhile to come around on Vick's legitimacy, but I eventually did. That said, there's no way I'd spend a first-round pick on him in a 2011 fantasy draft. Too streaky. Too susceptible to injury. And, yes, fair or not, I still have lingering concerns about Vick's character. If you think character has no place in a fantasy football discussion, you might want to have a word with a 2010 Randy Moss owner. For all the upside Vick offers, could you really draft him ahead of a money-in-the-bank guy like Peyton Manning?

— One more thought on Vick: I worry that he's Kordell Stewart, Part II. Here are Stewart's 1997 numbers in 16 starts: 3,020 passing yards, 21 TD passes, 476 rushing yards, 11 TD runs. Stewart's 1998 numbers in 16 starts: 2,560 passing yards, 11 TD passes, 406 rushing yards, two TD runs. If you think a Vick-Stewart comparison is apples to oranges, fair enough. But I wouldn't discount the possibility of a similarly dramatic drop-off.

— As much love as Matt Ryan gets from the TV analysts, he's a long way from becoming a top quarterback, particularly a top fantasy quarterback. Among quarterbacks with at least 210 passing attempts, Ryan currently ranks 28th in yards per passing attempt. Ryan averages 6.44 yards per attempt, putting him behind the likes of Mark Sanchez (6.49), Alex Smith (6.69) and Chad Henne (6.81). Yards per attempt isn't a flawless stat - Peyton Manning only ranks 20th in that category - but it's telling nonetheless. Ryan is more a game manager than playmaker, and I suspect that his upside is more limited than the pro-Ryan crowd believes. For 2011, I'd rather have Josh Freeman as my starting fantasy quarterback.

— Matt Forté has quietly had a nice fantasy season, albeit a streaky one. If the Bears make needed upgrades along their offensive line this offseason, Forté could be a top-10 running back next season.

— Some of the new blood at wide receiver will make for interesting debate leading up to next year's fantasy drafts. As an example, answer this question: Whom would you rank higher for next season - Reggie Wayne or the Buccaneers' Mike Williams? Is Wayne a no-brainer choice? I'm not so sure. Yeah, he plays with Peyton Manning, and a 1,200-yard season seems like a foregone conclusion. But Williams has 10 TD catches this season, compared with Wayne's five. Wayne has a sizeable edge in receptions and receiving yardage. But he's also going to turn 33 next November. Williams will be 24 next season.

— Assuming that Randy Moss is still in the league next year, it will be fascinating to see where he goes in fantasy drafts. Some will write him off completely; others will see major rebound potential. While it will be tempting to join the write-him-off camp, I'm not sure I can. He'll be 34 next season. Terrell Owens just turned 37 and was highly productive when healthy this year. And as dismal a season as Moss had, he still caught five TD passes, which is as many as Reggie Wayne and Larry Fitzgerald currently have. Moss might have another big season or two left in him. He might also sulk his way out of football. Who knows?

— Knowshon Moreno's 2010 numbers aren't terribly impressive, but he was a beast over the second half of the season, at least until he got hurt. He'll probably go lower in next year's drafts than he should.

— I plan to draft Kenny Britt in at least one league next year and possibly in several. He's a gem when healthy. And if the Titans find a real quarterback in the offseason, look out.

— This was a tough season for rookie running backs. But injuries were at least partly to blame for the disappointing rookie seasons that Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best had. They'll both obviously go later in 2011 drafts than they did in 2010, so both will have interesting profit potential.

— Can't wait to see what Stevie Johnson does for an encore next season. He came out of nowhere to put up big numbers this season. The Bills figure to be a team in flux next season, but Johnson will no doubt be a centerpiece of the offense, and despite his breakout year, I suspect he'll be drafted later than he should be in a lot of leagues.

— It will be interesting to see where DeAngelo Williams lands next season, and it will be interesting to see what the Panthers do with their running backs. I've turned into a big Mike Goodson fan. Even if Jonathan Stewart is dubbed the main man, Goodson still figures to play a significant role.

— Saints TE Jimmy Graham and Titans TE Jared Cook really came on at the end of the year. With their potential, they figure to be ranked ahead of some members of the old guard at tight end for next year. Are they top-10 tight ends for next year? Cook, no. Graham, maybe.

That's all for this year, dear readers. Thanks for a fun season. Looking forward to doing it all over again next year. Keep your fingers crossed for a quick NFL labor agreement.

Ochocinco will miss season finale

Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco will not travel with the team to Baltimore and will miss the season finale against the Ravens because of an ankle injury.

Ochocinco missed the Week 16 game against the Chargers as well. He had 67 catches for 831 yards and four touchdowns this season. It will only be his third season with less than 1,000 receiving yards.

The Bengals upset the Chargers in Week 16 and Jerome Simpson, in just his third career start, had 6-124-2.

The way we see it

This could be the end of Ochocinco's career in Cincinnati. He has one year left on his deal with a lot of questions surrounding the team's future with head coach Marvin Lewis.

Fantasy Spin

Expect Simpson and rookie WR Jordan Shipley to get some extra looks from Carson Palmer but the Bengals have to go against the Ravens' passing defense.

Anthony Armstrong Took Slow Route

Asked what makes teammate Anthony Armstrong a good receiver, Washington's Santana Moss smiled and said, "He's fast. He's fast. And he's fast."

However, while he can run 40 yards in an eye-popping 4.24 seconds, the 27-year-old Armstrong took the slow road to NFL success.

The graduate of Division II West Texas A&M played with the Odessa Roughnecks of something called the Intense Football League in 2006. He spent the next two seasons with the Dallas Desperados of the Arena League before signing with Miami with whom he spent 2008 on the practice squad. Armstrong joined Washington's practice squad in October 2009, not quite two months after being cut by the Dolphins, but he didn't make the Redskins' roster until this summer.

Elevated to the starting lineup in Week 5 in place of since-released veteran Joey Galloway, Armstrong is fifth in the NFL with 18.7 yards per catch heading into Sunday's finale against the New York Giants. His 787 yards are the most by a Redskins No. 2 receiver in 11 years. Although Armstrong has just 42 catches, he has had one of at least 45 yards in six of the last 13 games.

Report: Southern Miss WR Brown declares for draft

Southern Mississippi WR DeAndre Brown reportedly told coaches that he will enter the NFL draft, according to ESPN's Joe Schad.

Brown, a junior, missed seven games this season with a lower leg strain. In his first two seasons, he had a total of 1,902 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns.

He had three catches for 20 yards in the Beef O' Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl.

Danny Woodhead is Benjamin Button

Players change when they become New England Patriots.

Just ask running back Danny Woodhead.

He had trouble getting on the field for the New York Jets and was waived to make room for a reserve receiver who's no longer on the team.

The Patriots picked up Woodhead, and almost overnight he went from spare part to star. He's averaging 7.1 yards a run. He has five rushing touchdowns and another receiving.

But that's not all. The moment Woodhead joined the Patriots, he actually got shorter and younger.

He's a real-life Benjamin Button.

"I'll take it," Woodhead said with a laugh in the Ralph Wilson Stadium visitors' locker room Sunday. He ran for 93 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 32 yards in an easy victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Woodhead was a star at Division II Chadron State, but didn't get invited to the 2008 NFL scouting combine. That's where a lot of prospects first deliver their vital information to the league. Official heights and weights are established there.

Woodhead signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent. He entered the NFL at 5-foot-9 and with a birth date of Dec. 3, 1983.

Since joining the Patriots, Woodhead has admitted he is 5-7 3/4. His real birth date is Jan. 25, 1985.

The height discrepancy supposedly came from the Jets because Chadron State rounded him off at 5-8 when he played there. Woodhead said he had "no clue" where the erroneous birthday, which finally was switched on NFL.com last week, came from.

Woodhead embraces the idea he looks like the kid who'll ask if you'd like to Super Size that Filet-O-Fish combo. Woodhead recently posed as a sporting goods salesman to push No. 39 jerseys on unsuspecting customers.

Maybe now he can revel in his youth a little longer.

Instead of being 27 already, he's still 25 for another month.

"I'm always going to be short. Might as well get shorter," Woodhead said. "Being younger, I'll take that as long as I can. When people think you look younger, that'll help you the rest of your life."

Gary Kubiak Receives Support From Former Houston Oilers Coach Bum Phillips

Gary Kubiak's support in Houston seems to be growing a bit.

With pressure growing to fire Kubiak after five seasons as the team's coach, Bum Phillips -- a revered figure in Houston who coached the Oilers to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 1978 and 1979 -- visited Texans practice Wednesday and voiced support for Kubiak.

"Gary Kubiak's as good a football coach as anybody's got," Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com reported Phillips telling reporters as Texans Chairman and CEO Bob McNair listened nearby.

"Believe me. You're not going to get any better coach than him as a head coach, and that's one of the reasons I wanted to watch his team practice. If you can still make your football team practice like these kids practiced the last week of the season, nothing to look forward to, then believe me, he's got control of the football team. That's all he needs.

"He's been, what, number either two, three or four in offense for the last, what, four years? Five? With whoever he had. Didn't make any difference who he had playing. He's always been a good coach. You're not going to get any better than Gary Kubiak."

Phillips' support came as numerous reports this week have indicated that Kubiak will not be fired despite losses in eight of the last nine games. Several reports this week have former Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips possibly joining the staff as defensive coordinator, with current coordinator Frank Bush and secondary coach David Gibbs certainly being forced out following the season.

Brandon Lloyd Says Pro Bowl Honor Proves He Only Needed Opportunity

ENGLEWOOD, Col. -- Getting a chance to showcase perhaps the surest hands in the league, Brandon Lloyd made one sensational catch after another in a breakout campaign for the Denver Broncos that earned the eight-year veteran his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Just about the only thing the wide receiver let slip -- through his mouth not his fingers -- was his true feelings toward the three teams that let him go earlier in his career.

Asked during a conference call Tuesday evening whether he'd like to say, "Told you so" to the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears, Lloyd shot back, "No, I want to say '(expletive) you.' And I mean that in the most professional way."

The profane dig at his former teams came up again during Lloyd's news conference Wednesday at the Broncos' Dove Valley practice facility, where the team began preparations for Sunday's regular season finale against San Diego.

Lloyd said with a smile that he had been told to "keep it clean, and I'm going to keep it clean." But when asked if he wanted to back off the sentiments he had expressed so colorfully the night before, he said simply, "No, nope."

Ravens Pro Bowl Selections Include Ray Lewis, Ed Reed Yet Again

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis heads the 2010 Pro Bowl for Baltimore, along with four others. Defensive end Haloti Ngata, linebacker Terrell Suggs, kicker Billy Cundiff and safety Ed Reed were selected to be a part of the AFC Pro Bowl team.

The decorated All-Star event is pretty much the Ray Lewis Invitational for Baltimore as this is his 12th trip to the Pro Bowl in his 15-year career and for the third straight year, the Ravens sent at least five players to play among the NFL's best.

Despite being placed on the physically unable to perform list, causing him to miss the first six games of the regular season, Reed gets the nod as well. Reed has been to the Pro Bowl seven times in nine seasons, while this is Suggs' fourth trip and Ngata's second in consecutive years.

Cundiff is having a great season and this NFL journeyman has joined nine different rosters during his career. Kickers are very valuable and Cundiff, 30, proved his value to the Ravens after beating out veteran kicker Shayne Graham during training camp. He has kicked 38 touchbacks this season, which is a league high. He has made 24 of 27 field goals and scored 110 points.

Among the Ravens' five selections, Suggs is the only non-starter for the AFC team.

Punter Sam Koch, fullback Le'Ron McClain and left guard Ben Grubbs were named first alternates for the AFC. They would attend the event in Hawaii if a player taken ahead of them is unable to play.

Instant analysis: NC State 23, WVU 7

Here’s a quick recap of NC State’s 23-7 win:

How the game was won: West Virginia turned it over five times, and NC State didn’t surrender it once. For 11 seconds, NC State quarterback Russell Wilson dizzied West Virginia defenders with his feet on the Pack’s game-deciding touchdown -- a 7-yard pass to Jarvis Williams that gave NC State the 23-7 lead with just less than four minutes to play. Wilson continuously put his team in position to score, but didn’t get enough help from his receivers, who had too many drops. Kicker Josh Czajkowski made three straight field goals to distance the Pack in what was a sloppy game for both teams, with fumbles, drops and missed field goals.

Turning point: With 5:02 left in the game and West Virginia trailing 16-7, Jock Sanders fumbled a punt return and gave NC State possession on the Mountaineers’ 7-yard line just when West Virginia needed an answer the most. Instead, NC State scored three plays later.

Stat of the game: The five turnovers for West Virginia. NC State not having any was the difference in the game.

Player of the game: NC State quarterback Russell Wilson continued to find ways to keep plays alive and finished with 276 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added 41 rushing yards.

Unsung hero of the game: NC State’s defense. West Virginia entered the game averaging almost 27 points, and went nowhere against the Wolfpack. NC State recovered four fumbles.

Second guessing: Granted, NC State’s running game has struggled, but with a nine-point lead and about 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter -- not to mention the Pack’s case of drops-itis -- it was hard not to wonder why NC State didn’t at least try to run the ball more if only to run out the clock.

What it means: NC State coach Tom O’Brien earned his 100th career win, his first bowl win at NC State, and the program earned nine wins, the second-most in school history. It marked the end of a season that could wind up being a turning point for O’Brien and the program. The win over a top-ranked team helped compensate for the loss to Maryland in the regular-season finale that knocked NC State out of the ACC championship game.

Stoops: Backing the Hawkeyes in Insight

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops wrapped up practice a little after 4 p.m. local time before prepping for some more football on Tuesday night.

His plans were simple: head to Sun Devil Stadium for the Insight Bowl, where he'll cheer on his alma mater Iowa, when it takes on Missouri in nearby Tempe later tonight.

"I got my Hawkeye gear ready to go," Stoops said. "Sorry, I know Missouri's in the Big 12, but I'm a Hawkeye, so I gotta go cheer for my Hawks. We walk around all Saturday in the fall yelling, 'Go Hawks!' at home. My wife gets the kids yelling it, so we get to say it for real tonight and mean it."

Stoops, known for his trademark visor, doesn't have a black and gold version with the Hawkeye logo, but he's got a pullover ready for the Iowa season finale.

The whole Stoops family planned to be in attendance, but Stoops wasn't sure if he'd be in the stands or in a suite come kickoff.

"I'm going to get out early before the traffic, but we'll stay for a good part of it," he said.

Stoops was a defensive back at Iowa from 1979-82 before becoming a graduate assistant under famed coach Hayden Fry.

"I was there 10 years, all my brothers went there," he said. "Nobody can blame me for [rooting for the Hawkeyes]. Surely, Gary Pinkel will understand. He won't care, actually."

Saints vs. Falcons: Monday Night Football Live Chat

The Atlanta Falcons have been extremely difficult to beat at home over the past couple of seasons, owning a 19-3 record at the Georgia Dome since 2008. They have an opportunity to wrap up home field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs with a win against their divisional rivals from New Orleans on Monday, while the Saints are still clinging to a slim chance of coming back and winning the NFC South. To do that, they need to win their final two games and hope for a little bit of help (an Atlanta loss next weekend) as well.

Either way, it's the rare Monday night matchup that is actually a good one heading into the game, and we'll be live chatting all of the action starting at 8:30 PM ET, so please stop on by and join us.

Bill Cowher 'insulted' by Dolphins report

CBS Sports analyst Bill Cowher delivered a statement on "The NFL Today" in response to last week's report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Cowner's short list of places he'd like to coach feature the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans.
"Let me say this, for anyone to insinuate that I have a wish list of coaches to be fired at this time of the year, I have too much respect for the profession. I know how hard it is. I don't wish for anybody to be fired. And for someone to insinuate that I'm doing that right now is disrespectful to them, and I'm insulted by it. I would not do that to the profession I hope that every one of these coaches have an opportunity to come back.

"I'm not naive to say there won't be change at the end of the year, but I will address that at the end of the year. Besides I have a pretty good team up here right now [at CBS Sports], and we're going to the playoffs, and I'm going to enjoy and embrace every moment of it. Like I said before, I'm insulted by the fact that someone would imply that I'm out there, wishing anybody would get fired."

Double dose of Week 16 letdown in Jags? backfield

With a bum knee keeping Maurice Jones-Drew out of the biggest fantasy week of the season, backup Rashad Jennings was all set to run wild over the Redskins Sunday. Of course, things don't always play out as expected.

While Jennings had been playing very well in a change-of-pace role lately and was going against a Washington run defense that rates among the league's worst, he failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity. The second-year back ran for just 32 yards on 15 carries in an overtime defeat, costing many an owner in the process.

Jennings is a perfect example of how not all No. 2 RBs are created equal. While some guys can step right in and produce similar numbers to the starter, other backs are not cut out to handle a full complement of carries. Jennings did great picking up big chunks of yardage against defenses that were worn down by M.J.D., but when he had to take on a fresh unit, he was nowhere near as effective.

As for those wondering what this situation will look like in Week 17, only time will tell. The Jags still have a shot at winning the AFC South, so they won't be holding anything back against the Texans. That means Jones-Drew is likely to give it a go as long as the swelling in his knee subsides. Keep an eye on his status as the week rolls on.

Stepping up in the bowls: Arizona

Arizona kicks off the Pac-10 bowl season on Wednesday with a big test against Oklahoma State in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

The Wildcats are underdogs against a Cowboys team that was hoping for a BCS bowl berth until it lost its season finale against rival Oklahoma 47-41. The Cowboys own one of the most potent offenses in the nation. They have really only been slowed down once this year: during a visit to Kansas State when the Cowboys played was without the services of Justin Blackmon, who is only the nation's best receiver.

But let's ask this question: Who might dramatically change this game if he -- or they -- stepped up with a marquee performance?

Running backs Keola Antolin, Nic Grigsby and Greg Nwoko: This is fairly simple. What if Arizona can consistently run the ball against the Cowboys? Well, that would be a game-changer for a variety of reasons, not the least of which isthat itwould shorten the game and help play keep-away from the potent Oklahoma State offense.Further, if the Cowboys are forced to commit more bodies to stopping the run, italso would open things up downfield for quarterback Nick Foles. The reason three guys are listed here is all three will get carries, and each brings something different to the attack. Antolin is the starter and the most consistent. Nwoko brings a power element. Grigsby is a home run threat who's struggled with injuries. Of course, these guys need the Wildcats to win battles on the line of scrimmage, but it's up to the backs to turn those creases into big plays. If this troika manages to combine for around 180 or 200 yards -- significantly more than the season average of of 135 -- then expect Arizona to be in pretty darn good shape.

Jaguars Call Players-Only Meeting

The Jacksonville Jaguars' focus this week is partly on the postseason.

But mostly, it's about finishing strong.

Toward that end, veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis called a players-only meeting Monday with one focus: not finishing the season on a losing streak.

"Obviously, we'll be pulling for the Titans, but it's really more about us finishing strong right now," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told reporters Monday.

That was the prevailing theme around the Jaguars' facility Monday -- that although the Jaguars will be pulling for the Tennessee Titans to beat the Indianapolis Colts Sunday and give Jacksonville a chance at a playoff appearances, there is a more important priority:

Jim Tomsula, Mike Singletary's Replacement: NFL's Fourth Interim Coach

Filed under:

Mike Singletary was fired Sunday night after the 49ers' loss to the Rams ended their playoff chances. It was an ugly final game for Singletary, who spent part of it in a sideline altercation with Troy Smith.

Jim Tomsula (pictured), previously the team's defensive line coach, will take over the team for the season finale against the Cardinals. He's the fourth interim coach in the league this season, joining Jason Garrett (Cowboys, replacing Wade Phillips), Leslie Frazier (Vikings, replacing Brad Childress) and Eric Studesville (Broncos, replacing Josh McDaniels).

Those three have done a pretty good job. Garrett has gone 4-3, Frazier has been 2-2 and Studesville 1-2 in their interim coaching stints. While those win-loss records don't sparkle, their teams have looked more competitive after directionless starts to the season. All coaches have done enough to at least merit consideration for the full-time gig.

That apparently won't be the case with Tomsula.

One game is not enough for a coach to make his case, and that seemingly is OK with the team and Tomsula, who has agreed to step up only in an interim position. Tomsula is one of the team's most respected coaches. The defensive line has been a strong spot in mediocre years and Tomsula is the only coach on the roster with prior head coaching experience -- albeit with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. The 49ers want to retain him as an assistant.

This won't be the only change the 49ers make, as the team has said it will hire a general manager, as well.

Rams-Seahawks Flexed To Sunday Night With Do-Or-Die Implications

Singletary's firing sign of 49ers' instability

• It's rare that four coaches get fired before the season is over. The looming work stoppage could be seen as one reason why moves were made, with owners less likely to have made changes a year ago at a more uncertain time and more interested in finding out whether a capable successor exists on their current staffs to keep continuity. The greater reason was that no fired coach had the management style or leadership experience needed to captain an NFL team. Wade Philips was too laid-back; Brad Childress too territorial; Josh McDaniels too brash; and Mike Singletary too dictatorial. In Dallas, there was not enough confrontation. In Minnesota, Denver and San Francisco, there was too much of it, with Childress regularly at odds with Brett Favre, McDaniels unable to co-exist with former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and Singletary never learning the downside of undressing players publicly, going out after a sideline feud with Troy Smith that was reminiscent of the one with Vernon Davis that started his head-coaching career.

Much like the animated Herm Edwards, whom former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson annointed as a head coach without prior coordinator experience, Singletary did not have a keen understanding of football concepts or understand matchups the way a crafty coordinator does. When he hired Jimmy Raye to be the offensive coordinator in 2009, Singletary sought stability at the position, but Raye barely made it through a full season before his inefficiency and lack of creativity gave way to QB coach Mike Johnson and kept the offense in a state of flux.

The most stable, winningest franchises — New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia — have enjoyed great stability on their staffs and have had an eye for developing coaches, scouts and executives, often looking to supplement their staffs whenever possible, as Andy Reid has done with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, DB coach Dick Jauron, former Browns GM Phil Savage and ex-Bears personnel director Bobby DePaul. The Steelers sought to keep offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and OL coach Russ Grimm in place when they hired Mike Tomlin, and did not lose their treasured Hall of Fame defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. Bill Belichick often cross-trains moldable, young minds as coaches and evaluators, as he did with current personnel chief Nick Caserio and McDaniels, placing a high premium on versatility. And it was not until this year in Peyton Manning's tenure that the Colts were without offensive coordinator Tom Moore and OL coach Howard Mudd. Stability has been a consistent theme of every successful NFL operation, and the 49ers' organization has lacked that quality.

Tom Brady and Michael Vick remain front-runners for the NFL's MVP award, but it has not stopped veteran pro scouts who think outside the box from arguing that Bears cannon-armed gunslinger Jay Cutler is hands down more deserving of the award for what he has had to overcome. He has played behind an offensive line that has given up more sacks (50) than any other and with a group of imprecise route runners, yet he still consistently places the ball perfectly while being under siege, much like he was at Vanderbilt against SEC competition.

If he were in Philadelphia or New England, the Eagles and Patriots could be every bit as good as they are now, but it would be difficult for either Brady or Vick to have survived in the pressure-cooking pocket from which Cutler operates. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz is brilliant finding ways to uncover his receivers, and Mike Tice has done a very commendable job with a marginally talented offensive line, but there is no way the Bears' offense would be clicking and capable of stacking points the way it did against New York if it were not for Cutler, pick-six to Dwight Lowery and all.

• Even if NFL owners are not bound for the playoffs, they would like to know that their teams are headed in the right direction, that there is tangible progress being made in the final quarter of the season and the leadership is in place to win in years to come. For the Lions, the arrow is clearly pointing up. Seven of their 10 losses came by a touchdown or less, and the last three games they have knocked off Green Bay, Tampa Bay and Miami, finally beginning to learn what it means to finish. With a downtrodden, adversity-stricken Vikings team headed to Detroit on another short week after their Sunday night matchup in Philadelphia was postponed until Tuesday, Jim Schwartz stands a good chance to finish the final quarter of the season with a 4-0 mark.

• In St. Louis, second-year head coach Steve Spagnuolo is further along than Schwartz in a weaker division and could clinch a playoff spot if the Rams can beat an injury-riddled Seattle squad that has dropped its last three and five of its last six. It won't be easy on the road, but with a rookie quarterback at the helm, it marks considerable progress and will leave the Rams without a top-10 draft selection for the first time in four years and stop a seven-year skid.

• More teams are headed the other way, including Miami, with back-to-back home losses to Detroit and Buffalo and a 1-7 home record that has owner Stephen Ross questioning whether the leadership walked out the door when Bill Parcells exited. Houston owner Bob McNair stood by Gary Kubiak a year ago and has a roster with enough talent to contend in a down year for the AFC South, but too many mistakes have shown up at critical times and have contributed to the Texans owning the NFL's longest current losing streak, which sits at four after a 24-23 loss to an unsettled Broncos franchise employing a rookie quarterback. Correctable coaching mistakes and the inability to fill key needs have contributed to the Texans' woes. Enough talent is in place for a big-name hire such as Bill Cowher to make an immediate impact and stabilize operations, and both franchises, backed by strong resources and desperate to become viable, could be competing for his services.

• The Giants gave up 500-plus yards for first time since 1980 — a week after allowing the Eagles to overcome a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit and getting knocked out of first place in the NFC East. Despite still having a chance to figure into the postseason tournament, Tom Coughlin needs to field a much more meticulous unit than the turnover-happy, sloppy-executing squad that has showed up the past two weeks for the Mara family to forget about one of the most disappointing two-game skids in franchise history.

• With Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens out of the lineup, the Bengals' offense got better, not worse. The Bengals would have been better served scaling back the playbook and allowing third-year WRs Chad Simpson and Andre Caldwell into the lineup earlier in the season. With Simpson coming from Coastal Carolina and Caldwell from an unconventional Florida offense, some extra time was needed to learn the nuances of an NFL offense, but both clearly have the talent to play at a high level in the NFL. Simpson could be the second coming of Miles Austin and should make it easier for Bengals GM Mike Brown to part ways with one, if not both, of his distracting, declining receivers.

• With Maurice Jones-Drew out the lineup, the Jaguars' offense struggled to get started against Washington, much like it did a week ago when he was clearly slowed by a nagging knee injury. Jones-Drew carries the offense and makes an average offensive line look good. The inability of ORT Jordan Black to man the edge in place of the injured Eben Britton has sorely cost the Jaguars.

• As he has throughout the season, Lions LB Ashlee Palmer made another high-impact, fumble-inducing hit on Davone Bess on Detroit's opening punt to set up a 3-0 lead. The Lions' aggressiveness, toughness and physicality has shown up heavily on defense and special teams. Year Three could be the charm for Jim Schwartz if he can find some more attitude on his offensive line.

• Because the Steelers have a better divisional record than the Ravens, they currently sit atop the AFC North — even though both teams have identical 11-4 records — and would be higher seated in the playoffs. But that is not to say Pittsburgh is the more feared opponent. No offensive coordinator likes to face a Dick LeBeau-led defense, but the Steelers' injury-riddled OT position cannot handle edge speed and could knock the Steelers out of contention early. The Ravens, who have hit their stride late in the season with the return of Ed Reed, are a more complete, formidable contender.
