Jim Tomsula, Mike Singletary's Replacement: NFL's Fourth Interim Coach

Filed under:

Mike Singletary was fired Sunday night after the 49ers' loss to the Rams ended their playoff chances. It was an ugly final game for Singletary, who spent part of it in a sideline altercation with Troy Smith.

Jim Tomsula (pictured), previously the team's defensive line coach, will take over the team for the season finale against the Cardinals. He's the fourth interim coach in the league this season, joining Jason Garrett (Cowboys, replacing Wade Phillips), Leslie Frazier (Vikings, replacing Brad Childress) and Eric Studesville (Broncos, replacing Josh McDaniels).

Those three have done a pretty good job. Garrett has gone 4-3, Frazier has been 2-2 and Studesville 1-2 in their interim coaching stints. While those win-loss records don't sparkle, their teams have looked more competitive after directionless starts to the season. All coaches have done enough to at least merit consideration for the full-time gig.

That apparently won't be the case with Tomsula.

One game is not enough for a coach to make his case, and that seemingly is OK with the team and Tomsula, who has agreed to step up only in an interim position. Tomsula is one of the team's most respected coaches. The defensive line has been a strong spot in mediocre years and Tomsula is the only coach on the roster with prior head coaching experience -- albeit with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. The 49ers want to retain him as an assistant.

This won't be the only change the 49ers make, as the team has said it will hire a general manager, as well.
