Gary Kubiak Receives Support From Former Houston Oilers Coach Bum Phillips

Gary Kubiak's support in Houston seems to be growing a bit.

With pressure growing to fire Kubiak after five seasons as the team's coach, Bum Phillips -- a revered figure in Houston who coached the Oilers to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 1978 and 1979 -- visited Texans practice Wednesday and voiced support for Kubiak.

"Gary Kubiak's as good a football coach as anybody's got," Nick Scurfield of HoustonTexans.com reported Phillips telling reporters as Texans Chairman and CEO Bob McNair listened nearby.

"Believe me. You're not going to get any better coach than him as a head coach, and that's one of the reasons I wanted to watch his team practice. If you can still make your football team practice like these kids practiced the last week of the season, nothing to look forward to, then believe me, he's got control of the football team. That's all he needs.

"He's been, what, number either two, three or four in offense for the last, what, four years? Five? With whoever he had. Didn't make any difference who he had playing. He's always been a good coach. You're not going to get any better than Gary Kubiak."

Phillips' support came as numerous reports this week have indicated that Kubiak will not be fired despite losses in eight of the last nine games. Several reports this week have former Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips possibly joining the staff as defensive coordinator, with current coordinator Frank Bush and secondary coach David Gibbs certainly being forced out following the season.
