Seahawks' Junior Siavii Placed on Injured Reserve With Spinal Cord Issues

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks got news they could have done without on Christmas Eve with the announcement that defensive tackle Junior Siavii is out for the season.

Siavii, who had been subbing successfully for the injured Red Bryant, was placed on injured reserve Friday. He'd been diagnosed as having a stinger, and the club was holding out hope he'd play in Tampa Bay Sunday, but now there is some concern that the injury is worse than that.

"He has an issue with his spinal cord,'' coach Pete Carroll said Friday. "He took a real good shot (Sunday against the Falcons), and it was just for precautions to make sure that he's going to be well and make a good recovery. There's some issue with concern about the bruising of the spinal cord. It doesn't show up on MRIs, but he has all of the symptoms, so we just need to take
care of him.

"He's not in any danger in all in that regard; he just needs time. So it's the right thing to do for us, and it's going to be about a month at least. So not knowing what we're going to do, we need to make a move right now.

What the Seahawks will do with their line and linebacking corps depth already thin is up in the air. The club signed linebacker Joe Pawelek from the practice squad to take Siavii's place on the roster. Pawelek, an undrafted rookie, has been around all year.
