The Colts have placed WR Austin Collie on injured reserve after he suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 15 against the Jaguars. Veteran DB Ken Hamlin was signed to fill the spot vacated by Collie on the 53-man roster.
Collie returned against the Jaguars after missing the previous three games with a concussion. The second-year receiver was having a big first half, with eight receptions, 87 receiving yards and a pair of TDs before he was hit in the head by Jaguars LB Daryl Smith's elbow late in the second quarter on a reception over the middle. Collie laid motionless on his chest on the field for several minutes before eventually being rolled over on his back and slowly walked to the locker room by the Colts training staff.
Collie suffered his first concussion in Week Nine against the Eagles on a very similiar play. He missed one game before returning against the Patriots, but he was removed at halftime because of a recurrence from the first concussion. Collie then missed the next three weeks before returning in Week 15.
The way we see it
Collie's trip to injured reserve seemed imminent, despite head coach Jim Caldwell saying on Monday that Collie had not been ruled out. With two very scary concussions in his last two full quarters of action, ending the promising young receivers' season was the only responsible decision. The Colts will hope that a long offseason gives Collie the opportunity to rest, heal and make a full recovery. The Colts will miss him dearly on the field, as he was targeted 10 times in the first half on Sunday and had picked up right where he left off early in the season when it appeared he was poised for a monster 2010 campaign.
The signing of the veteran Hamlin makes sense, as the Colts lost two more DBs on Sunday — S Al Afalava (ankle) and S Mike Newton (neck) — and the extent of their injuries are not yet known.
