In the Patriots' first preseason game this season, WR Julian Edelman led the way with six catches for 90 yards. He received lots of attention for being a Wes Welker 2.0. With Welker healthy, we knew Edelman's role would decrease, but he would still add a wrinkle to the offense. Instead, the former Kent State quarterback has rarely been used, most games not recording a reception. The foot injury that kept him out of the season opener isn't the reason for Edelman's lack of targets — the Pats' abundance of receiving options is. Playing with two tight ends on the field often means there simply isn't room for Edelman, the team's fourth best wideout. He is still the Patriots' punt returner and finally broke out against the Lions with a 28-yard return. And the second-year player remains Welker's replacement if the veteran gets hurt.
