WICHITA -- By hitting 10 3-point shots and finding easy transition baskets, Wichita State blew out Chicago State 91-51 on Wednesday night.
The Shockers (5-1) were led by David Kyles' 15 points, Demetric Williams' career-high 14 and J.T. Durley's 11.
The Cougars (2-6) had just one player in double figures as Carl Montgomery scored 10 points.
Playing a tune-up before Saturday night's game at No. 17 San Diego State, Wichita State shared the minutes and the scoring. Fourteen Shockers scored, and 11 played at least 13 minutes. Only Williams, with 23, topped 20 minutes.
Kyles picked up in the second half right where he left off in the first, hitting two 3-pointers as Wichita State scored the first eight points after halftime for a 57-22 lead.
Chicago State did score seven straight to cut it to 57-29, but Pawel Kielbasa's short jumper that made it 62-33 was the last time the Cougars were within 30.
About the only suspense was whether Wichita State would crack 100 points for the first time since a 102-46 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 17, 2006. The Shockers had 81 with 7:21 remaining. But with little-used reserves and walk-ons playing the bulk of the final 6 minutes, they fell short.
Despite being called for only two more fouls (19 to 17), Chicago State shot 14 fewer free throws. The Shockers were 21 of 25 from the line while, the Cougars were 8 of 11.
Chicago State put together a decent stretch midway through the first half, as Montgomery's emphatic slam ignited a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to 29-20 with 6:55 to play in the half.
But the Shockers exploded from there with a 20-2 run to take a 49-22 halftime lead. Williams scored six points during the stretch, while Kyles hit two 3-pointers -- the second one from 25 feet.
