EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Five years ago, New York running back Tiki Barber broke loose for 57 yards on the first play of the game against Washington. The Giants finished that series with a field goal and never looked back en route to a 36-0 romp.
Sunday, Brandon Jacobs, who was a rookie backup to Barber back in 2005, broke a weak tackle attempt by Washington linebacker Rocky McIntosh and rumbled 39 yards on the game's second play.
Five plays later, Jacobs deftly cut back left and danced into the end zone untouched for the touchdown that put the Giants ahead en route to a 31-7 rout. It was the first touchdown on an opening drive this season for the Giants (8-4), who forged a tie atop the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles.
For good measure, New York repeated its opening seven-play, 59-yard scoring march with another on its second possession. This time, the trigger was a pass over the middle from Eli Manning to tight end Kevin Boss on the first snap. Ahmad Bradshaw, demoted behind Jacobs last month because of fumbliing issues, finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run on which massive nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu and safety Reed Doughty couldn't prevent him from crossing the goal line.
Some thoughts on the game:
o. Graham Gano went 3-for-3 on field goal tries during his first visit to New Meadowlands Stadium in August, However, it's a whole different environment on a cold and windy December day as Washington's first-year man discovered when his 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left in the first quarter. It capped a drive on which James Davis carried four times for 34 yards and first-year receiver Anthony Armstrong got wide-open for a 22-yard pass from Donovan McNabb, upon which 15 yards were added via a tripping penalty on New York safety Antrel Rolle.
